Copy-Editing

A copy-editor makes the author’s message clear to the public and ensures that the text is appropriately prepared for publication.

Copy-editors check that the content supplied to them is factually correct, structurally logical and internally consistent. They not only correct mistakes of grammar, punctuation and spelling, but also revise and rewrite the text to clarify authorial intention while keeping within the author’s style. The copy-editor will flag any queries with the author, for example where further explanation is necessary for the author’s message to be conveyed clearly.

The copy-editor is also responsible for applying the house style (the correct headings, font styles, etc.) in preparation for handing over the document to the production department/typesetter to be laid out in book form.
