I am a freelance editor and proofreader who specializes in working with science and technology publishers. Before embarking on my freelance career, I worked as an in-house editor of computer programming manuals for Wrox Press. Now I combine accomplishing my professional goals with being at home for my young, school-age family.
I gave up work completely while my children were small, only deciding to return to the workforce once my youngest child began attending school. Now a resident of a small village near Milton Keynes there is a shortage of publishing jobs in my locality, and commuting an hour each way to “nearby” Oxford for a part-time position is not a viable option. Working freelance provides the ideal opportunity for me to work in a career that I love, but on my terms.
Having been out of the workforce for the best part of a decade, I was keen to ensure that my industry knowledge and skills were as complete and up-to-date as possible. I joined the Society of Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) as an Associate and undertook the Publishing Training Centre’s industry-respected Basic Proofreading by Distance Learning course with a view to progressing to Ordinary, and eventually Advanced, status.
